What in the world is “liberal Islam” ???

Image thanks to here

This is one of the “latest” terms being bandied about in our society – some use it in a positive way and some use it in a negative way.  In most cases, most people use this term so carelessly in any way that they please which serves to demonstrate the mental confusion.

Any discussion of “Liberal Islam” is always liked to the criticism of “liberalism” by the critics. This is yet another term that has many meanings and being used by many in different ways. At the end of the day, the discussion descends into how the term is being used rather than the substance of the argument.

Liberalism is not necessarily a “bad thing”. The Latin word “liber” itself means “free” and what is wrong with the “soul” being free? Surely we do not support the opposite of being free which is being enslaved?

The online Encyclopaedia Britannica defines Liberalism as follows:

“liberalism, political doctrine that takes protecting and enhancing the freedom of the individual to be the central problem of politics. Liberals typically believe that government is necessary to protect individuals from being harmed by others; but they also recognize that government itself can pose a threat to liberty. As the revolutionary American pamphleteer Thomas Paine expressed it in “Common Sense” (1776), government is at best “a necessary evil.” Laws, judges, and police are needed to secure the individual’s life and liberty, but their coercive power may also be turned against him. The problem, then, is to devise a system that gives government the power necessary to protect individual liberty but also prevents those who govern from abusing that power”.

Looking at the definition above, one can agree that Liberalism is not “bad” after all. It is true that one of the major roles of governments is to protect individuals from being harmed by others. However, governments themselves may exert harm on its citizens through abuse of power. Another philosophy central to Liberalism is the upholding of the human dignity and this is characterised by the notion that human beings are inherently good and hence they should generally have the freedom to decide for themselves on various aspects of their lives. There is of course a balance of “freedom” that is sought to be achieved and not as the critics suggest that Liberalism seeks absolute freedom for the individual.

On another note, the word “liberal” itself has both positive and negative connotations. Generally, in the first world and progressive countries, it is seen as a positive trait while in the third world and so-called “Islamic countries” it is seen in a negative light. One wonders why this is so – is it because of the differences in educational levels and economic levels or due cultural and religious factors?

In third world and “so called Islamic” countries, the word “Liberal” appears to mean “doing as you wish, being free without basis or deviating from a set of established fundamental understandings or behaviours”.
What has all the discussion above has to do with “liberal Islam”? Once again, even this term seems to have different meanings to different people.

In Malaysia, the term “Liberal Islam” has a very negative meaning among the mainstream conservative Muslims. They see “Liberal Islam” as a “deviationist” movement away from “true” and “accepted” understanding of what Islam is. Such general accusations without going into the substance of what the proponents of so called “Muslim Liberalists” are arguing does not augur well for the maturity of the Muslim population.

I want to digress a bit and take up a different argument. For the sake of argument let’s say we use the word “liberal” to mean the “act of departing from the original principles or the fundamental of something” and apply this to how Islam is being understood. Based on this understanding, we may have the following scenarios:

1)      No one can deny that the first and fundamental source of Islam is the Quran.  This was the revelation to the Prophet Muhammad who himself would have been guided by it and not his own personal whims and fancies. In this scenario, would not any references to his so-called acts and utterances (collectively called the “hadiths and/or sunnah of the Prophet”) to shape the understanding of Islam be considered a “liberal act” especially if the “Islam” that emerges is different as contained in the Quran?

For the sake of argument, it would appear that the Muslim who sticks only to the Quran to get his understanding of Islam is a “fundamentalist” but the one who seeks extra sources is a “liberal”. However, in today’s mainstream Muslim community, a Muslim who primarily wants to be guided by the Quran alone is labelled as “anti-hadith”, “anti-prophet” and even a deviant in law. The fact that the world of hadith is replete with debate seems irrelevant to the ostracisation of the “Quran alone” group either by societal pressure of by State laws.

In other words, the Muslim who wants to stick only to the Quran either has to be “closet Quranist” or he is compelled by law and society to adjust his behaviour and belief to that of the mainstream belief. Otherwise, he has to be prepared to suffer for his beliefs – imposition by coercion and possible oppression.

2)      It is generally accepted that the main source of Islam is both the Quran and the Hadith/Sunnah of the Prophet. However, even this scenario also seems to pose problems because many also insist that while the hadith explains the Quran, the clergy is the expert group that explains both the Quran and the Hadith. Hence, they come up with a third category called the “consensus of the ulema” or “ijmak” ulema. The consensus of the ulema is actually the juristic reasoning and exposition of many things today that represents and shapes what Islam is. In this type of thinking, it becomes almost mandatory of the ordinary Muslims to accept unquestionably the “collective views” of the clergy as part of their faith.

Again for the sake of argument, if we take the position that Quran and Sunnah are the two fundamental sources of what Islam is, then would not the mandatory acceptance of clergy views be an act of being “liberal”?

3)      If one studies Islamic jurisprudence or usul al fiqh as it is called in Arabic, one will find that there are many other “sources” which the clergy or jurists rely on to arrive at an understanding of “what Islam is”. This is the juridical process of exegesis and reasoning which in reality shapes mainstream Islam. Would this be argued as being "liberal"?

From the above discussion, it should be clear that it is pointless to hurl and be influenced by labels such as “anti-hadith”, “liberalists” and so on without understanding the substance of the argument or philosophy. It is even worse when one has the subservient attitude of accepting what the clergy, however learned and sincere they are, as the absolute truth without cross referencing with the Quran itself or without examining the thought processes of the clergy or the ulema.

The end question is – does the society itself allow the Muslim to seek out the answer for himself or is he expected to be a blind follower since it has all been decided by “some learned folks”?
Peace.

Political Leaders Failed our Kids in the English Language Sector !!!

This was troubling me for a long while - why does it seem that the quality of thinking our younger generation ( those in their twenties now) has deteriorated drastically compared to the twenties of my generation.

Not only their command of the English language atrocious, their command of the Malay language is nothing to shout about, the things they talk about and how they talk about it is generally puerile, superficial and sadly reflective of a generation without thinking skills.

I chanced upon a few writings of some 18 year olds of my generation. I was stunned at the depth and deepness of their thinking? I looked at some of my own writings - I was writing philosophical stuff, politics and religion at 16 ! All these was normal for my generation and I dare say those writings would be considered "too high level" even for graduates of today> So, what went wrong?.

1. Firstly,  I think is the politicisation of the National Language. The use of BM as a medium of instruction and thinking has actually hindered thinking abilities and education potentials. The reason is simple - BM is limited in words and in concepts. The less words you have the less you are able to think and conceptualise. There are many concepts in the English language which is alien to the Malay culture (which determines the BM). The potential to think is curbed by the limitation of the Malay language. Matters are made worse by the inefficiency of Dewan Bahasa to churn out effective words in BM.

There are not many quality books in Malay and since it is the Malay officer who decides what books to be allowed to be translated into Malay, the more zealous "nationalist" ones does not allow critical stuff to be translated. Books in Malay or bahasa Indonesia which is critical are banned. So, society's thinking levels is being shaped by the low level thinking of the officers put in charge.

I still shudder with shame when I recall a former KSU of the Transport Ministry saying " Kita Melayu jadi kita cakap lah Bahasa Malaysia" in a meeting when one of the persons explained in English! I later discovered that he can hardly speak English !!!

Could it because of this kind of "culture" and regressive mindset of those in authority that only books in Malay are banned while more critical or controversial books in English are not?

2. Social engineering gone wrong. The various steps and quests taken to produce more Malay graduates have not matched quantity with quality. Quite apart from making local Malay graduates insular, they have been given a wrong impression of excellence by giving mediocrity the semblance of excellence. The entire country is now suffering from mediocre and weak human capital in all of its sectors - private and especially public sector.

3. Politicisation of education - the curriculum itself has been compromised by those in authority who are least qualified to determine the contents of education. There has been no long term educational policy since Merdeka which kept changing with changes in the Minister of Education Manipulation and skewing of facts in the contents of subjects such as "history", "kajian am" and so on.

4. Religiosity in schools - this was and probably is the biggest hindrance to quality education. Pseudo-religious teaching and packaging masquerading as Islam in schools has distracted the teachers to teach relevant subjects effectively and distracted the students from learning. Religiosity seemed to have crept into every sector of the schools. Today this has also crept into almost every sector of the government and ministries to the extent that efficiency and relevance has been compromised.

What do you think ?

In the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

image thanks to http://www.dancingwithhappiness.com/
1.         Every Muslim since a child is taught to begin with the utterance of bismillah hirrahman nirrahim before he does anything. It means "In the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful".

2.         This is a constant reminder of the grace and mercy of Allah on his creations. It is a statement of His infinite compassion and forgiveness. In fact Allah describes Himself as “one who forgives again and again" (see Quran 20:82)

3.         A true mukmin or believer of Allah will have compassion, grace and mercy within him when he deals with the creations of Allah which includes his dealings with fellow human beings - whether believers or otherwise.  A true believer does not insult the gods of others or poke fun at their beliefs degradingly . Can a person who goes around with his skull cap on his head, projects himself to be a Muslim political leader be anything more than a hypocrite when he consistently and deliberately goes against the following commandment from Allah?;

“Revile not you those whom they call upon besides God, lest they out of spite revile Allah in their ignorance. Thus have We made alluring to each people its own doings. In the end will they return to their Lord, and We shall then tell them the truth of all that they did”. (Q 6:108)

4.         Believers are taught by Allah to debate, argue or discuss with others with differing views in the most intelligent, wise and polite ways possible. There is nothing in the Quran at all where believers are ever enjoined to be harsh with others in matters of faith or to exercise oppression or compulsion to bring others to the path of Allah.

“Invite (all) to the Way of your  Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for your Lord knows best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance”. (Q 16:125)

5.         Today we witness persons speaking in the name of Allah with total arrogance, impunity, harshness towards fellow human beings and completely without compassion even to fellow believers who may have differing views. Some of these persons are termed as "scholars" simply by virtue of the fact that they were fortunate to obtain papers of qualifications from Universities.  They either forget or do not want to remember that any sincere ordinary Muslim with differing views from them may ask them the following question taught by Allah in the Quran:

068.036  What is the matter with you? How judge you?

068.037  Or have you a book through which you learn-

068.038  That you shall have, through it whatever you choose?

068.039  Or have you Covenants with Us to oath, reaching to the Day of Judgment,
(providing) that you shall have whatever you shall demand?

068.040  Ask you of them, which of them will stand surety for that!

068.041  Or have they some "Partners" (in Godhead)? Then let them produce their
"partners", if they are truthful!”

6          But they lack compassion, politeness, mercy and forgiveness in their speech and their actions - all these being virtues of a true Muslim as explained in the Quran, the revelation from Allah. Lacking all these, they exhibit "pharaonic" characteristics of oppression by compelling others to submit to their views of what the teachings of Allah are.  No one is allowed to hold a different view or interpretation of how to submit to Allah without their approval and consent. Does this not remind those who believe in the Quran of the meeting between Firaun and  Prophet Moses:

 a) “Said Pharaoh: "Believe you in Him before I give you permission? Surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out its people: but soon shall you know (the consequences). ( Q: 7:123

"Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will
cause you all to die on the cross." (Q: 7:124)

b) “
Said Pharaoh: "Leave me to slay Moses; and let him call on his Lord! What I fear is lest he should change your religion, or lest he should cause mischief to appear in the land!" )          (Q  40.026

7.                 Efforts to be on the straight path ordained by Allah is being hindered by people who lack compassion, arrogant and who place themselves as the sole interpreter of Allah's verses in the Quran. They have absolutely no shame or fear of Allah in compelling on you their version of religion that you must follow completely unmindful of the following verses from the Quran:
Say: "What! Will you instruct God about your religion? But God knows all
that is in the heavens and on earth: He has full knowledge of all things”. (Q49:16)

Can those who are oppressive, unforgiving, arrogant and totally lack compassion be servants of Allah or true believers (mukmin) ? Or are they hypocrites out to cause mischief and hinder human beings from the path of Allah for self-glory and wealth?
I leave that question for you to ponder.

Peace !

NOTE: The above views are entirely my understanding and no one is required to agree with them. Kindly check with your own copy of the Quran and make up your own minds and thoughts. If I have erred in my facts, kindly highlight to me.

Rest in Peace YB Karpal Singh, the Tiger of Jelutong

Words always do not come easy to express what one feels when he hears news of the death of someone he knows well and respects.

I have known YB Karpal since very young and so does my family. My sister what's app me thus:

"I am feeling very sad. I know Karpal as a brother who used to bring lunch everyday for me and his wife Gurmit in the Penang library". I whatsapped her back:

"His time has come and we can only wish his soul the best as God pleases. He passed away in the course of duty - not many get that opportunity at his age - he's lucky".

I have always had the utmost respect for him as a lawyer . The case laws are evident of his contribution to the development  of law in the country. Though I may not agree with some of his politics, nevertheless I have respect for his sincere commitment to his politics - there are not many politicians like that around in this country or in the world.

He is a brave soul who speaks his mind and an extremely hardworking man - both in law and in politics. I have always known him to be kind in my dealings with him.  Only "regret" I have is that we never got about to do a talk show with him on "Rapera" because of our respective busy schedules.

His contribution in national politics is immense that he should be awarded a national award posthumously - this will speak well of incumbent politicians' maturity.

My deepest condolences to his family and may whatever good he had sought for be continued.

Peace !

MH 370 : Will the Wall of Hope and Care Turn to A Real Ladder of Assistance ????

Now that news have come out that there is almost no hope of finding the passengers of MH 370, reality will sink in for the families of the passengers.

The reality is:

a) For those who have children, families or parents to take care of - where is the money going to come from to live?

b) How are these dependants going to get into the bank accounts and properties of the passengers so that they can continue living -there will be alot of bureaucratic hurdles which will make their life difficult  - no wall of hope, prayers and cards can alleviate it except real practical assistance to remove these hurdles !

To me, now comes the real test of compassion, care and assistance - will those who can help assist these victims to put their life back on track?

Will the respective governments, civil servants, insurance companies and MAS itself do what it should to ease the process for the families of the passengers on MH370?

Will all those who wrote on the "walls of hope", prayed in masses and sent flowers now make another mass plea and pressure those concerned - to ensure that the families of the passengers of MH 370 can get back on track with the least bureaucracy possible? it can be done.

Otherwise, I will be convinced that all those prayers and walls of hope are mostly nothing more than mere hype to make oneself feel that one has "cared" .

If I am one of the families of the passengers, I want help to get back on track, not some scribblings on the wall and some mantras.

Peace !

DO not lose focus like MH 370

There is always the real possibility that after a while, people will lose focus on what the real issues are in the MH 370 episode. It is very easy to let emotions be manipulated so that the people will forget the real issues.

Should not the real issues be:

1) What really happened and how it could be allowed to happen? And why it happened ?

2) Should there not be total transparency on the part of authorities  to the People?

3) Are the families of the passengers being taken care of as well as is possible to go through the trauma ?

To me these are the real issues and the rest is circus.

Peace !

MH 370 - Occasion for renewed Humanity ???

Most certainly it was a shocker to me when news broke that MH370 just disappeared off the radar screen.
How is it possible for such a huge machine to just disappear?  Ever since then there has been many theories, search and rescue operations are still on and organised prayers of all sorts.

Personally, though hopeful, I will find it highly improbable that the plane will be found in tact.  If intact, it would have been found already.

My prayers are that whatever the experiences of the passengers, God is merciful to them in all ways possible. To the relatives of the passengers, I pray that God gives them the strength, the faith and patience to go through these difficult times. I also pray that they are gifted with relatives and friends who can comfort and console them. I cannot do more for them.

What really bothers me is that while I am sure there are many sincere people praying sincerely, many others are turning this prayer thing into a major circus and PR exercise. If one of my relatives were on board, I would be more hurt than happy to see the circus.

I have often wondered if it is really a sense of humanity that brings people together when there are calamities and disasters or is it simply herd survival instincts taking place. People who are humane remain humane at all times - happy and sad moments.

For the very people who know the passengers, it is real. They feel for them and their families. I am referring generally to the frenzy that seem to have overtaken the country - what ? They really care for the fate of the passengers? I doubt.

I know I am saying things people may not want to hear or may sound morbid.

I know that the frenzy will soon die down and it will be business as usual for everyone except for those who are directly related to the passengers.

As far as MH 370's disappearance goes, I think people just want to know what and how it happened. They simply want their curiousity satisfied and they want to know who to blame. They also want an occasion to have a "party of caring" and for those with vested interest it is an opportunity to achieve whatever base objectives they have. Vultures are a fact of life.

I am sorry, I am not convinced that many care.

If people really cared how different is the daily starving, dying children all over the world???

If people really cared in this country, how caring are us to the children and old persons not from our ethnic origin? How caring have we been to those from different faiths from us?

How caring are us to the fate and struggles of the immigrants amidst us?

It seems to be just facade after facade that many engage in. I simply refuse to be part of this facade. I just want to know what exactly happened with the hope that a) this can be prevented in the future b) to book in the culprits, if any and c) to understand manipulative behaviours, if any.

I would rather turn this MH 370 episode to remind each of us alive in Malaysia how fragile and temporary this life is and that we must start now to take care of each other. I would rather this be a message of renewed love and sharingness between Malaysians....to remind ourselves to sprinkle some of that love and sharing to the unfortunate immigrants in our midst. This is the kind of prayer that I want to see - a prayer that can be translated to reality with our hearts and with our actions. But alas, we are stuck in symbolism.

We have a real chance to be together and to be humane now. There is no need to wait for a disaster or a calamity before we learn that God intended us to share and care.

Peace !

Only the People can bring about real reform

I am sure quite a number of thinkers, real reformers, prophets and ordinary people must have said this before.  But we forget easily. Life and its demands make us forget it. Our sense of helplessness, and the threats, bullying by the powerful and the institutions make us think we are weak and make us adapt.

Only the People can bring about true reform – if we are united and help each other.

We are not united in our sense of helplessness and our hopes because we have been forced by the system to become slaves of the masters that have been created. Due to our disunity of purpose and hope, we continue to be misled by the politicians and the institutions that continue to take our away our dignity as human beings.
We continue to be oppressed by those who abuse democracy for their selfish ends.  We fail or simply think we have to accept a system that does not throw us the best choice of candidates as leaders.

Hence we do not have leaders who really understand the aspirations, needs and hopes of the common man. These leaders do not understand that we want a safe home for our kids, that we want affordable homes, food decent employment to live, and basic necessities like free education,, free medical services, child and old age care and so on.  All these can be done but they do not and will not do it as efficiently as can be done.

The reason is simple: they do not and will not face these challenges because they,  their children and their cronies live a luxurious life of aplenty.  They cannot emphatise with the needs that they themselves do not have.  They themselves are stuck in the position to sustain their status and lifestyles.

Do you not recognize them and see their game?

Do you not see the conspiracy between the politicians, the capitalist and their religious elites to keep the People politically, economically and spiritually enslaved? So they can perpetuate their position of influence and give the people an illusion of reforms, and illusion of service?

They have managed to divide us, not only along racial and religious lines but occupationally as well.  We have been tricked into thinking we are just civil servants, workers in the government sector, private sector and so on letting us forget that we are at the end of the day – common, ordinary folks who need each other.
It is sad that occupationally be have been divided until we often become enemies of each other instead of cooperating to enhance our quality of life. Thus, we become even weaker to confront the oppression by the politicians, capitalists and the religious elites. We continue to be humiliated slaves on God’s earth – struggling only to survive.

The People have to be united – doesn't matter who we are occupationally, we have to help each other, help each other to make our lives a little easier.

Our only defence against the oppression of the politicians, capitalists and the religious elites is our unity and cooperation.  Only we can bring about real reforms. We are our only hope.

We have to make the 21st century the era of the common People.

We and our children have a God given-right to live in dignity.

Peace !

Apa keturunan kamu Adik ? - Racial Profiling in Government Schools ???

Setiap kali kita dengar pemimpin politik mengatakan bahawa mereka mahukan rakyat Malaysia bersatu.

Bagaimana kalau kita tulis sahaja begini:

Keturunan : Adam.

Salam.

Menjelang Pilihanraya Kecil Kajang

Jangan lah selalu bersikap nak buang air baru nak bina tandas.

Bakal Ketua Menteri Selangor YAB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ???

YAB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ???

This blog's readers will immediately realise that this is the first time I am mentioning the name of Anwar Ibrahim on this blog.  I have been avoiding mentioning his name for reasons of my own for almost 8 years but when the political realities itself keep pushing him forward despite the odds stacked against him, then  we have to address that.

Without doubt, Anwar Ibrahim will win in the Kajang By-Election. I will be surprised otherwise.  The are several reasons why he will win:

1) BN image nationwide is still negatively perceived generally despite whatever it is doing
2) BN has not been successful in managing its political image in the country
3) UMNO itself is still very fragmented with powerful groups within tussling for real control and power
4) too many sensitive issues not properly addressed by the Government
5) there is a general feeling that there is no leadership in the country - though this may not be true but that is the all round perception that is left unaddressed.
6) UMNO bloggers do not have the effective  ability to confront the Pakatan perception machinery - there may even be a descend to vulgarity, profanity and arrogance which people are sick of.

BN's biggest problem in becoming strong again is none other than UMNO.  UMNO, despite all it's rhetoric appears not to want to change. In terms of how it handles it's political problem. They are trapped in the nostalgia of total control which the laws and the circumstances of the country allowed them before 2004.

UMNO has weakened considerably since 1998 and the one chance they had in 2004, they blew it in 2008 primarily because of the political fight between Tun Abdullah and Tun Mahathir.  It is no use for UMNO to deny that there was a concerted nationwide attempt and effort to weaken UMNO by UMNO big guns throughout 2004 to 2008 to oust Tun Abdullah.

Unfortunately for UMNO, there has been no radical and fundamental steps taken to cure UMNO from this internal political virus that is still plaguing UMNO.  Admittedly it is a daunting task but a task that must be undertaken if UMNO wants to regain its former glory. However, this is not done. Hence, UMNO seems directionless in giving a political direction to the Malays in particular and to the Malaysians in general.

With such a virus affecting UMNO, does Pakatan really need to embark on a major election campaign to win the by-election? I think not.

Imagine the horror that awaits BN should Anwar win the by-election with an impressive majority?

Imagine the horror that awaits BN should Anwar become the YAB Chief Minister of Selangor?

I think I will not be exaggerating to say that if Anwar becomes the CM, he may even outshine the PM on various issues because Anwar has the politically ability to do what it takes.

At the end of the day, people like winners.

So, UMNO better be forewarned.

Peace !

Chapter 3: The Devil’s Statistics

"
Even numbers have meanings. They have meanings that are. They have meanings that were never meant to be. The Real confused with the illusion. The illusion becoming the Real. In some languages, 4 is a bad number. It means death.

Death is an inescapable  reality.
An end to all madness and tyranny.
A way home,
so how can it be bad?"

Laws - Oppress or Protect You ?

Everyone knows and everyone had been told that laws are necessary for society to be peaceful and stable.

No reasonable person will deny that some sort of rules, regulations and laws are necessary to determine "the rules of the game" for everyone. These rules will make it clear what some or all can do and what others or all cannot do.Undeniably, there are unreasonable people among us, the age old fight between "good and evil" will forever exists so long as human beings exists. Laws protect and empower the "good" and punish, deter or eliminate the evil.

Laws therefore are very powerful tools to control human beings.

But what if the the laws are in the hands of the evil and they want to use the rules to oppress the people so that they can exist and survive. History has shown many rulers, politicians and governments that pass evil laws to oppress the people just to perpetuate the interest of the wealthy and powerful.

The people or the masses, generally are unaware of evil laws that are being passed until it affects them individually and personally by which time it is always too late.

The middle, lower income and poor people are usually too busy trying to sustain themselves in life to notice what the wealthy and powerful are doing.

What if the laws that oppress the people are further passed in the name of God or religion?

How many ordinary people will even understand that even such laws can be oppressive for they may feel ignorantly guilty if they oppose such laws? They may think or may have been indoctrinated to think that any law mentioned in the name of God must never be objected.

Through out history all governments and rulers, whether evil or good, have always passed laws in the name of the people or in the name of religion.

Can normal, ordinary, struggling people monitor and oppose bad laws?

Would they dare? Can they afford the sacrifice involved?

How many honourable and brave citizens are there to support and advocate good laws?

At the end of the day, whatever our individual circumstance, it is us and us alone that condone or object to evil laws by evil men,

The other citizens may either support us or stay far away merely hoping we will succeed. And there are other ignoble citizens who wish us to fail so that they can maintain thier status quo and income from the bad laws by the evil men.

And a Rapera's choice is just too clear.

Rest in Peace Nelson Mandela

A great leader has walked on earth and has passed away on 5th December 2013 at age 95. Without doubt he is an excellent personification of a Rapera.

CNN writes:

"(CNN) -- Freedom fighter, prisoner, moral compass and South Africa's symbol of the struggle against racial oppression.
That was Nelson Mandela, who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead his country out of decades of apartheid.
His message of reconciliation, not vengeance, inspired the world after he negotiated a peaceful end to segregation and urged forgiveness for the white government that imprisoned him.
"As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison," Mandela said after he was freed in 1990".

‘Gandhi’s first non-violent movement had Chinese link’

A portrait of Mahatma Gandhi.'The idea of non-violence as an alternative to armed uprising which formed the core of Mahatma Gandhi’s movement had a China connection as hundreds of Chinese took part in his first peaceful protest in Zanzibar in 1906, a noted Indian historian said.

Highlighting this much-forgotten Chinese link to the birth of Gandhi’s non-violent movement, veteran Indian historian Ramachandra Guha told a meeting here that 1,100 Chinese along with 8,000 Indians took part in the agitation against Asiatic ordinance of the then Zanzibar racist government in East Africa in 1906.

This was Gandhi’s first movement after the idea of non-violence as an alternative to armed violence to bring about political change was formulated on September 11, 1906 at Johannesburg in South Africa, which Guha described as the world’s first 9/11.

The Asiatic ordinance barred Asians from owning property, made it mandatory to carry identity cards and imposed restrictions on their trade bringing about system of exclusion.

Subsequently the first non-violent movement was launched by Gandhi in Zanzibar when the racist government in which Chinese took part shoulder-to-shoulder along with Indians, Mr. Guha said at a literary festival.

Significantly, the first truce agreement with Zanzibar government was signed by Gandhi, Thambi Naidoo, on behalf of Tamils and Leon Qin who represented the Chinese.

Piqued by Indian-Chinese solidarity in 1906-1909 the Zanzibar government brought about more stringent ordinance resulting in the deportation of both Indians and Chinese to Madras, now Chennai, he said.

After the deportation Qin talked about how their movement in Zanzibar was given birth to Asian solidarity movement, Mr. Guha said referring to a newspaper clipping of that time'.

You can continue reading here.

History has many accounts of significant cooperation between the two great civilisations - Indian and Chinese and also documents much Indian influence   on Chinese civilisation. I predict history is going to repeat itself.

Peace.

Chris Goslow Comments on Rapera

Incidentally I found something which was written on Chris Goslow's website in 2009 yesterday. Chris Goslow is a pianist, composer and song writer from Sacramento USA. By a strange coincidence, he also produced a musical called "Rapera"in 2009!

He wrote the following on his website:

Rapera Latest Updates:
(February 8, 2009) MALAYSIAN LAW LECTURER’S UNCANNY “RAPERA” DEFINITION
I was astounded to find a blog by a Malaysian law lecturer, in which he defines the term “rapera” as a “savior citizen…[who makes] a positive impact in the betterment of society.” His ideas bear an uncanny resemblance to the spirit ofRapera and especially to the character of the youth. Read Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos’s blog here!"

This only proves that when its time is right, ideas become universal.

Why write nothing on the UMNO Elections?

This is one of the questions my friends have been asking me - why have you not written your thoughts on the UMNO elections? None of my very close friends asked me this as they know me very well.

To begin with, I have been busy trying to get justice for my clients. Also, my NGO activities have been keeping me occupied. More importantly, I developed again the "cannot write virus".

I simply could not write anything on any of the issues my blogger friends are writing about. I am not saying they are wasting their time or they should stop writing - but I just could not.

What can I possibly write about the impending elections? Write about the candidates? Well, quite a number of them are my friends and quite a number of others are known to me.

I admit, there are a few new and potential faces in the competition.

But I always ask the wrong the question - fundamentally how is the current political system (with the emphasis on patronage, lineage and money) ever going to change anything fundamentally for the Malaysians?

Well, since this is an UMNO election, the question is: how is it ever going to change the fate of the Malays and the bumiputras fundamentally?

The way I see it is that everyone keeps complaining about the traffic jams and then each politician champions the cause to build bigger and better roads. Every blogger and columnists gets into a frenzied discussion on which politicians' "vision" of bigger and better roads are better. They start looking at the history of road buidling by the politicians. The academics join in the fray and present papers on it. The clerics also join in discussing the "Islamic" roads and the halal and haram aspect of the roads. The whole nation gets frenzied and busy.

But no one looks at the root of the problem - holistic long term planning ! No one cares to see that there are so many factors which are inter-pendent affecting the traffic jams - town planning, transportation planning,  accommodation planning, vehicle production planning and so on. These take too much thinking and planning are are just too long term.

So, everyone takes the short cut - just focus on the short term - to expand the road or not?

Likewise with the UMNO election. Generally speaking, what fundamental, dramatic and far- reaching impact do we expect from the election that is going on?

Have we heard any thing earth shaking from any of the leaders or is it generally toe the line and use the rehashed strategy that they have been used to all along?

If we keep doing things the same way we have been for the past 50 years, do you think it will be any different the next 50 years?

Apologies if I wasted your time reading this.

I told you - nothing that is happening at the moment is inspiring me to write.

Peace !
