Life is about balance. While we can boast of high-rise buildings and various developments, in many other areas, we are still 3rd class mentality who refuses to acknowledge that fact. It seems as a nation, we do not have “a policy of balance” in many areas of our national life.
We are also a nation of contradictions. One area that I want to bring up today concerns youth.
While I too like to dance and listen to music, I believe that the authorities should seriously regulate the following:
1. availability and access of alcohol to young people;
2. the operating hours of pubs, discos and clubs (“entertainment joints”).
It appears to me that entertainment joints could just operate right up to the early hours of the morning. There must be a cut-off point. We cannot be encouraging a hedonistic culture to nurture when we know from other countries what the end result will be. The operating hours of such joints deep into the night only encourages young people to waste their life away and expose them to unnecessary personal and social problems. At the moment, the statistics may not show that there exists a major problem but even one kid gone astray is life that must be saved.
Entertainment, like everything else must be accompanied/tempered by responsibility and moderation. This is the value that we must inculcate in the young people. I am not with those who want to ban all ‘safe’ entertainment joints but I am also not agreeable with unbridled, unregulated entertainment places.
We have heard of the use of drugs of various sorts in these places. We also know how alcohol has been abused to take advantage of drunken young girls. We have to find a way to make these places a truly nice place to simply enjoy music and dance or simply to hang out and have good fun.
I recall in my younger days, we had discos. We did not have MTV culture then. But I remember the discos then were generally ‘clean’ (yes, there were drugs but hardly). There was even discipline in dancing. Of course, there was the occasional rare ‘outbursts’. I also remember that most of my friends drank coke or 7up because they did not like the idea of being drunk. When you are drunk, you lose your senses and without senses, you cannot enjoy. Even those who drank did not drink to the point of throwing up. What fun is there in puking?
I hope the licensing authorities and the relevant youth bodies seriously look into the above matter.
Peace !
This video shows the humiliation that can befall you when you over consume alcohol!
NOTE: THOSE WHO ARE AVERSE TO NUDITY OR FIND IT OFFENSIVE ARE WARNED NOT TO WATCH THIS VIDEO. (I posted this video to show how horrible loss of control can be.)

Salam Bro. Jay,
He..he...those were the days eh ! They call it 'Tea Dance' with Coke, 7UP, gals and music ! Itu aje tapi enjoy abis !
Self-control is more important than regulation... the youth are rebellious… regulations have not worked with this particular generation... they seem to always find a way of getting what they want...
Most of these modern day clubbers have parents that in the past forbade them from clubbing, hence why the “rusa masuk kampung” behavior when they earn on their own… moderation is important in everything, parents too should have a moderate stand when it comes to such issues... parents should consent their children’s choices in life, support their children, than the child might be receptive to accept advice from the parents...
Im with BID , once a teenager too with no parent to tell me what is wrong n what is right, had all the freedom in the world n I never touch those stuff, its a matter of choices and self discipline...to consume or not to consume alcohol, to smoke or not to smoke,to practice good moral value or just stay happy in blur-land n continue to be ignorant.
It's not a license consenting foolish ,irresponsible and fun driven behaviour simple bcoz they still young.
There's always a brain, id,ego and superego... nak guna atau taknak guna sahaja.
Tutup awal pun, abg Jay pasti ke depa balik rumah, pasti ke boleh kurangkan supply of those dangerous substances ? Sejauh mana boleh diharapkan pihak berkuasa kita ?
Budak2 ni, patutnya ikat sahaja kat pokok asam yang ada kerengga tu :D ... masalahnya kat bandar susah nak cari pokok asam.
BID & NiaSara,
totally agree with both of you...self control is important. My point is that while self control is important, the authorities do not have go out of their way to create more temptations in the way of youth. Eg by allowing pubs to operate throughout the night..it is like a case of available choice..supply "creating the demand".
Peace !
alahai...Jahamy dok bagi jawapan macamlah tak belajar ekonomi, macamlah tak tau laws of supply and demand, factors affecting demands etc..etc,n if there is a shortage of supply they will tend to find something else as a substitute.
N i bet there is no substitute for cigarette.Harga naik macam mana pun, sehari berapa pack u merokok ?
You asking too much from our authorities, recognize this seven letter word ? BRIBERY.
Again, ikat jer budak2 ni kat pokok asam :p

sarah sebenarnya setuju dgn pendapat abg jay tu,saja jer suka menjawab n cari fasal :D
Uncle J, I see one fatal flaw in your logic...
Though the law of supply and demand governs/mediates business, such an idea cannot be applied in social surroundings...
we live in a megalomaniac society, since the government has made all the social-illnesses possible, it would be nearly impossible to eradicate them... notice the work nearly...
the only way for regulations of such sorts to succeed, one must plan it on a global scale, which is sadly not possible at the current time, but perhaps possible in the future...
take for instance Dubai, regulations are in place to prevent pubs and clubs from operating beyond a certain hour, but thanks to the existence of information technology, there exist an underground society which organizes and orchestrates parties...
one simply has to wait for an sms that will tell you the venue and time of the party... mathematicians will probably say that the pattern can be deciphered, and authorities can identify the next possible venue for the party, and raids could be conducted...
but from an economics stand-point, will the benefit outweigh the cost?
Night life, parties, these are driving factors for tourism… most tourist, especially Arabs, come to Malaysia due to the fact that there are no regulations governing these events...
The availability of beer, liquor and hard liquor are also unspoken marketing/advertising factors that are in play...
with regulation I fear we will lose our revenue from the tourism industry...
I like the proverb “charity begins at home”, and I believe the concept can be adapted here...
proper education and proper inculcation of positive-social valued done properly (especially by parents) will instill virtues in society, hence accomplishing self regulating individuals...
BID,
Thanks for your comments.
You wrote: "Though the law of supply and demand governs/mediates business, such an idea cannot be applied in social surroundings".
What I meant was this: if the choices are available, it is possible that the choice will be accepted. Eg if we allow pubs to operate up to 5 am, then there will be people going to it.
If you limit the time, then you have limited accessibility. This is what I meant as an example that when there is supply, there will be people consuming it. This is what corporatism is all about (intend to write on this, if I can find the time!)
Peace !
BID & Niasara,
What Uncle, Brader, Tuan Jay is saying is that, there should be some degree of DUE DILIGENCE be practised by the relevant authorities. Due Diligence is being practised in many industries. A simple understanding of due diligence can be comprehend from the usage in defense under criminal law which states something like this la (lagi detail, tanya Jay la):-
'the defendant must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they did everything possible to prevent the act from happening. It is not enough that they took the normal standard of care in their industry - they must show that they took every reasonable precaution'(Wikipedia.org)
Sama la ngan rumah kita. Kalau pintu tu sentiasa terbuka, kira message nye, any tom dick & harry leh masuk keluar le ! Tapi kalau di tutup, hanye penyamun tarbus aje la yang leh masuk ! kan..kan..kan...
Tapi kalau semua dah di buat, perkara tu jadi gak, apa leh buat ! Species 'KETEGAQ' KAN..KAN...KAN....!
Ketegaq la yg kena ikat kat pokok asam...hehe.
Baik cikgu Jon!!! kami faham la sebenaqnya, saja suka mengusik ustaz Jay yang tak berapa ustaz tu... :D
Lagipun Jahamy mana boleh lena tidoq kalau takdak sapa nak lawan cakap dia.

wish I could be as clear as you. Thanks!

I find myself unable to write anything in regards to your arguements...
